two little gems from the FT today (2nd one isn't online)
The number of lobbyists in Washington has doubled to 34,750 since 2001. It is now a $2.1 billion industry.
Bush has visited disaster zones in Louisiana and Texas seven times, traveling about 15,400 miles to and from Washington. Air Force One, a spokesman at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois tells him, uses about 3,840 gallons of jet fuel every hour. So the presidential fly-overs have burned up no less than 135,000 gallons of jet fuel.
[... actually, this last bit is pretty stupid. Jet fuel costs around $125 a barrel. There are 42 gallons in a barrel of oil. So Bush has spent around $402,0o00 on his visits.
Big deal. While it was probably cheaper to make a video for him to outline what was happening during Katrina, our national debt goes up around $1.5 billion per day.]
