You should had seen Portuguese history textbooks ... they knew that beyond the Pyrenees there was France, to the north of it Britain, to the east - Germany, and somewhere lower right - Italy. But beyond the Rhine it was pure hic sunt ursus (surprisingly they were aware that lions lived to the south) stuff. Sweden, Poland, Ukraine, Hungary - arranged in random combinations ...
