the climate in NYC is definitely changing, and it’s terrible...
In the 10 years between 2006 and 2015, NYC received 43” of rain on average per year, in line with the 100 year average. The range of annual rainfalls was very tight – with a low of 36” in 2007 and a high of 56” in 2011.
In the last 30 months, NYC has received on average 56” of rain per year, or 30% more rain than normal. This period includes a ridiculous 12-month stretch of 72”. It’s May 14th and we have already met our historical monthly average for all of May – such occurrences have become fairly frequent lately. For perspective, Miami – which is technically in the subtropics zone – averages 61” per year, and the less rainy parts of the amazon receive ~80” per year. It may surprise you to see NYC is getting more rain of late than the following cities – all of which you’d assume get more rain than we do:
Seattle: 38”
London: 23”
Rio: 50”
Dublin: 30”
Sydney: 41”
Bali: 48” (worth stating the obvious that Bali is a tropical island ~400 miles from the equator)
